Britain’s 300,000 Gypsies, Roma and Travellers have lived, worked and travelled throughout Britain for over 500 years, yet we have been almost entirely written out of British history.
Go to most museums, libraries and schools and nothing about our history and culture is kept or taught. The result is a widespread ignorance about who we are, which sometimes turns to hatred, fear and misunderstanding. In schools, children learn more about the Romans, Vikings or even fairies than they do about our cultures and what we have contributed to this world.

Preparing for Gypsy, Roma & Traveller History Month (June)
at your School or Youth Club
(Half Day Training)
10th May 2010
9.30 – 1pm
Venue: Stratford
Gypsy, Roma & Traveller History Month is a national event in June sponsored by the DCSF. This training is suitable for education staff, youth workers, play projects, volunteers and others working with Gypsy, Roma and Traveller children, who want to gain and share ideas of how to celebrate Gypsy, Roma & Traveller History Month in their schools, clubs or as part of their work. Delegates may have Gypsy, Roma and Traveller children at their schools or clubs or may simply wish for these ethnic groups to be represented in the life of their school or club.
Aim
To increase participants’ understanding of Gypsy, Roma and Traveller communities, the discrimination they face and how their history and culture can be celebrated in schools and youth clubs
Learning Objectives
By the end of the training participants will be able to:
• Describe some important elements of Gypsy, Roma & Traveller history and culture and consider how to celebrate these
• Identify the issues facing Gypsy, Roma and Traveller children and young people
• Describe the major barriers preventing Gypsy, Roma and Traveller young people from thriving at school
Outcomes
Through engaging with Gypsy, Roma and Traveller culture and history, staff will therefore feel more confident in implementing the key principles of good practice in working with Gypsy, Roma and Traveller communities and in creating a celebration of their cultures that the whole school or other institutions can be part of.
